Ute Trails &
Seasonal Rounds

We utilized a dense network of trails linking every part of our homelands. We developed and used profound and systematic knowledge that was passed down to younger generations to live in this rugged and diverse landscape. This knowledge revolved around the seasonality of plants and animals, as well as our relationship with weather patterns, seasonal changes, mineral springs, vapor caves, skyscapes, lunar calendar, waterways, and placement of the sun.

“Extended family groups (from 20-100 people) moved through known hunting and gathering grounds…on a seasonal basis.”
Betsy Chapoose, Ute Indian Tribe

“A lot of the highways, and a lot of the trails that were used by people coming across this country, follow Ute trails.”

“The Mountains had everything that they wanted: food, shelter, medicine, water. And so, they could live in these mountains.”
